Thoughts on Priesthood:
The priest is the one chosen by God to bring people closer to Him. The priest has no other mission in life, no other purpose, than to draw people to God. He trains, studies, and prepares for a life dedicated to this very task. He is ordinary and knows that he is weak. But he surrenders himself completely to God that he might be given the graces needed to faithfully serve the people of God in an extraordinary way.
Why I Want to Be a Priest:
I want to be a priest because I want to do the will of God. And after much discernment, I discovered deep within a call from God to become a priest. I know too that His will for me is ultimately the deep desire I have for my life is well. Truly in following His will I have discovered my own desire for this same gift of priesthood. It is a challenging road, full of sacrifice and hardship, but for the one so called, also filled with the greatest joys and happiness one can ever experience in life. And this I know is my road.
How did your family and friends react when you made that decision? Are they supportive now?
My family and friends were largely supportive. My friends are mostly Catholic or at least Christian so I did not have many people shocked at my decision. I did have some question my decision.
What is the hardest part of being in the seminary?
The most difficult aspect is perhaps the best as well. And that is, if you are truly open to the seminary process, you are formed to become a priest. This means you are pushed, pulled, tugged, and sometimes kicked so as to be made into the image of Christ the High Priest. More specifically, this means surrendering your will over to the daily schedule, the rhythm of prayer, intellectual study, relationships with others, and pastoral ministry.
What is the best part?
The best part is pastoral ministry. I love going out to the parishes to spend time with youth groups or RCIA groups. This past year I really enjoyed working at the hospital trying my best to share the love of Christ.
Who/what influenced your decision to enter the seminary?
There were three priests during my time in Davis that helped turn my thoughts towards the priesthood. Fr. David Fontaine, Fr. Richard Blinn, and Fr. Chuck Kelly each inspired me with their words and actions.
Hobbies & Interests:
I love to play and watch almost any sport – hockey, baseball, football, soccer, tennis, and golf. I love to read, hike, camp, and take naps.
What advice would you give to a young man thinking about the priesthood?
Listen to the words of Jesus to the apostles, “Put out into deep waters.” Be courageous enough to let God lead you where He wants you to go. Trust in His providence. He will not leave you drowning in the deep end but show you where to catch the greatest number of fish. He will show you your life’s true purpose…if you let Him.
